Annie Wersching on KSDK St. Louis July 14, 2009 talking about her participation in the 2009 Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game, how she landed her 24 role, and more.
Art Holiday: Local actress, Annie Wersching, may be better known by the name of the FBI Agent she plays on TV’s 24. But as Mike Garrity reports, these days, Wersching is a big enough name to be invited to play in the Celebrity Softball game.
Mike Garrity: Exactly, her stock is up there these days. Alright, I’ll tell you what – Annie Wersching’s TV character, agent Renee Walker of the FBI can be seen kicking butt with the likes of Jack Bauer on 24. But if you caught the All-Star Celebrity softball game last night on TV, you might be interested to know that the actress known for her red hair admits that she was actually a little bit nervous taking the field at Busch Stadium.
Annie Wersching: I was on the Lucky Sluggers when I was about twelve here in St. Louis so I’m really happy that I was able to represent for the Lucky Sluggers.
Mike Garrity: Annie Wersching has plenty to smile about, pointing out her name on this weeks All-Star Celebrity Softball roster. On the field at Busch, she served as catcher for the National League team.
Annie Wersching: It was kinda ridiculous. I was batting between Vince Coleman and Ozzy Smith. I would say the coolest part was when we very first came out onto the field and everyone was standing up and cheering and we were throwing… And I saw the chairs, the dugout chairs with our names on em, again between Vince Coleman and Ozzy Smith.
Mike Garrity: Now in a top role, playing FBI Agent Renee Walker on FOX’s 24, Wersching got her start acting on the high school stage, attending Crossroads College Prep in the central west end.
Annie Wersching: I was a huge fan of that show, I’ve watched every episode of every season. So it’s just weird, it’s the same kinda weird that playing in Busch Stadium is. I’m still shaking my head like “I can’t believe this is happening” *laughs*
Mike Garrity: An only child, Wersching first attended New City School and lived in this house. Her father, a professor and opera singer, died when she was twelve. Wersching tells us she honed her work ethic right here, working for her mom at what used to be a flower shop called “Surprise” that her mother owned. It was located right next to World’s Fair Donuts right in St. Louis’s garden district. When she moved to LA eight years ago, Wersching first worked to land bit parts, eventually landed a regular role on General Hospital.
Annie Wersching: It’s on every day and my mom and all my friends would take a break from work or whatever they were doing to go back and watch General Hospital for an hour and get to see her daughter who lived 3,000 miles away. So that was really cool.
Mike Garrity: Wersching’s mom has since joined her in LA, but friends in St. Louis notice only one change.
Mary McAteer (friend): The red hair. She was blonde. I mean personality wise, she’s exactly the same as she was. She hasn’t changed, she hasn’t gone to LA and got all snobby or anything *laughs*. The biggest difference is the hair.
Mike Garrity: That was McGurk’s Irish Pub in Soulard where we sat down with Wersching. She actually chose that location, she grew up performing traditional Irish dance there on occasion. She was a student with St. Louis’s Mary Mayer school of Irish dance. A very interesting person to meet, and you’ll be meeting her a little bit later on this morning.
Art Holiday: She’s actually agreed to give up some sleep and come out here and join us. So we’ll have a live interview with Annie Wersching of 24. So we’re looking forward to that. Mike, thank you very much.
